Canterbury School’s Patrick Horan and Mariner High School’s Leo Perez were named Florida Dairy Farmers Boys Soccer Players of the Year on Tuesday for Class 2A and 4A, respectively.
Horan, a Rollins College recruit, led the state in goals with 72 and added 22 assists as Canterbury went 17-3 and won a district championship before losing to Community School of Naples 2-0 in a regional semifinal.
“I am extremely honored to win the award,” Horan said. “Once again, I’m glad that Canterbury soccer is getting more and more recognition each year and I hope that continues. It was a good season and it’s nice to receive some accolades for the accomplishments.”
Perez, who signed with the Naval Academy and is the reigning state Gatorade Player of the Year, guided Mariner to a 25-5-1 record and a state runner-up finish by scoring 69 goals and assisting on 30 more.
“It’s my second time winning it with the Class 3A (award) last year,” Perez said. “It just feels like I’ve been doing the right things, getting constantly better. After losing a state final, it feels great to have some victory in a sense.”
Both are finalists for the state’s Mr. Soccer Award, which will be announced Thursday.
