Cape Coral Cyclones Joins WPSL as Expansion Team for 2021 Season

More Growth in South Florida for WPSL
CAPE CORAL, Florida – The Women’s Premier Soccer League sees more growth in south Florida with the newest expansion team in Cape Coral. The Cape Coral Cyclones’ inaugural season with the league will be played during the 2021 WPSL Season.

Founded in 1974, the Cape Coral Soccer Association (CCSA) has continued to provide immense opportunity for player development in the youth soccer community of southwest Florida.

“Cape Coral is thrilled to be accepted into the Women’s Premier Soccer League,” Eddie Carmean, Director of Coaching said.

With the addition of a WPSL team, the Cyclones have paved another way for their girls’ competitive program, allowing the WPSL to serve as the final destination of their player development pathway for women’s soccer in Cape Coral.

“We have all these girls that come through our program go on to play college soccer,” Carmean said. “It is wonderful to give them this level of play in Cape Coral while they are on college summer break and continue after their college careers are over – it is our hope that some will use this platform to be discovered for the NWSL or U.S. Women’s National Team.”

The WPSL saw 100 alumnae play at the professional level between the NWSL 2020 Challenge Cup and Fall Series and has former players playing in professional leagues abroad including Spain, England, and Denmark. There are also nine alumnae currently on the USWNT roster; two of which played in the last three WPSL seasons.

Home games for the 2021 WPSL season will be played at Tony McKenna Stadium at Mariner High School and ticket information will be confirmed at a later date.

Bajro Dizdarevic, who currently serves as coach for the U13 and U16 girls CCSA teams as well as head goalkeeper trainer, will become head coach for the WPSL squad. Dizdarevic played professionally for NK Krajisnik and NK Mladost in Bosnia for eight seasons and NK Djakoyo in Croatia for one season. Three of his goalkeepers with CCSA received NCAA Division I College Scholarships in the past two years.

CCSA is actively involved with community service on several fronts each year including serving as one of the largest TOPS (The Outreach Program of Soccer) programs in the state and the only one is southwest Florida. Through this program, CCSA offers ten week seasons each spring for over 125 special needs athletes with soccer skills training and camaraderie with players from the Cyclones program who serve as “buddies”.

In addition, each season, CCSA conducts a toy drive in conjunction with the Salvation Army’s Toy for Tots program and hold a food drive to benefit a local agency.

More information about Cape Coral Cyclones can be found at their website capecoralsoccer.com as well as their Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages. For additional information on the WPSL visit wpslsoccer.com.

The WPSL is in its 23rd season and is the largest women’s soccer league in the world with more than 125 clubs from coast-to-coast in 35 states. WPSL rosters feature elite collegiate, post-collegiate, international and standout prep student-athletes. Many of the United States’ most accomplished women’s players have played in the WPSL, including household names such as Alex Morgan, Abby Wambach, Megan Rapinoe, Julie Foudy and Brandi Chastain.

CCSA Joins The Big Six League

The Cape Coral Soccer Association is excited to announce their involvement in The Big Six League as a founding member.

The following press release was announced Saturday, May 23, 2020:

FORMATION OF THE BIG SIX LEAGUE

May 23, 2020

Fort Myers, Florida – The Big Six League is a new high-level league being created in Florida. This will be an FYSA based league and its aim is to attract the top teams in the U11 and U12 girls age groups. This will be a merit-based team league, it is not a club-based league, and will use the YouthSoccerRankings.us as the main determinant for entry.

We are looking for U11 and U12 girls teams to apply now! The league will consist of six teams, The Big Six, and they will play a 10-game schedule that starts in August and ends in March.

For this upcoming season, we are starting both age groups of the league with Sunrise Sting, Cape Coral Cyclones and West Florida Flames. Based on the current rankings from YouthSoccerRankings.us, in the FL 2009 age group, these three teams are ranked 1, 2, and 4. In the FL 2010 age group, these teams are ranked 2, 3, and 6. These three founding clubs will not get automatic access each year. The top-ranked 6 teams that apply get the spots, each year.

The League is looking to add three more teams in each age group to round out the 2020-2021 season. Any other team in the state inside the top 6 is guaranteed a spot. The deadline to apply for the 2020-2021 season is May 30th. We encourage teams that are interested in high-level competition to apply as soon as possible.

To apply please send an email to info@bigsixleague.com. Please include club name, contact person from club/team, and age group you are applying for.

CCSA’s Leo Perez Named Gatorade’s Florida Boys Soccer Player of the Year

Cape Coral Soccer Association’s very own Leo Perez has been named Gatorade’s Florida Boys Soccer Player of the Year. Leo is the first in the history of his high school, Mariner High School in Cape Coral, and of CCSA to receive this distinction.

Leo started with CCSA in the fall of 2015. He has played the past few seasons for the Cyclones under Coach Bajro Dizdarevic and for coach Martin Cardenas at Mariner High School. He will be playing for the U19 boys Cyclones team with Coach Terry Horan this fall.

In a press release from Gatorade, Leo’s accomplishments both on and off the field are highlighted –

“The 6-foot, 160-pound junior forward scored a school-record 47 goals and passed for 17 assists this past season,
leading the Tritons (24-2-4) to the Class 3A state quarterfinals. The Class 3A Player of the Year, Perez recorded 13 multi-goal games, including seven hat tricks. An Allstate All-America selection, Perez was chosen to compete in July’s Allstate Cup in Orlando. He was also the 2018 News-Press All-Area Player of the Year.

Perez has volunteered locally as a youth soccer coach. “Despite everyone knowing who he is and what he can do, he still finds a way to get to the ball and that’s when he’s at his best,” said Martin Cardenas, head coach of Mariner High. “Leo with the ball at his feet is unlike any other player I’ve coached in the last 26 years. He is glued to that ball and just does things that are not in the script.”

Perez has maintained a weighted 3.90 GPA in the classroom. He will begin his senior year of high school this fall.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. From the 12 national winners, one male and one female athlete are each named Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year. In all, 607 athletes are honored each year.”

Please join all of us at CCSA in congratulating Leo on this tremendous achievement. His leadership on the field as well as on the sidelines as a volunteer coach are a great tribute to Leo and his family, and we are thankful to have him as part of the CCSA family.

Eddie Carmean Entered into LCAC Hall of Fame

Eddie Carmean’s renaissance as an all encompassing local soccer legend started in 1977 when he helped sod the soccer fields at the Cape Coral Soccer Complex.

Carmean’s commitment to youth soccer will reach a new level Sunday when he joins six other individuals at the induction ceremony for the 2017 Lee County School District’s Lee County Athletic Conference Hall of Fame.

Cape Coral businessman and former Cape Coral High School athletic director Don Justice; Alvin Ashley, Mariner High School; Ikechukwu Binns, Island Coast High School; Sheldon Fleming, East Lee County High School; Gary Freis and Clyde Allen, Fort Myers High School join Carmean as inductees.

Carmean moved on from laying sod to play for the Cape Coral Soccer Association Tornadoes (now Cyclones), earn MVP honors at Cape Coral High School for two years and then become captain and All-Conference as a senior at the University of South Florida in 1992.

He started a seven year career with the Kansas City Attack in the National Professional Soccer League in 1992, securing Rookie of the Year honors and then guiding the team to national titles in 1995 and 1996. He played more than 300 professional games, scoring 85 goals and recording 101 assists.

Carmean returned and worked as a trainer for the CCSA in 2001, mentoring players who would eventually play for state title teams with the Seahawks (2010) and Ida Baker (2011). He was selected to run the CCSA recreational program in 2005 and oversee the competitive Cyclones teams in 2010.

Former CCSA director and retired Cape Coral High School coach Aldo Nardiello has watched Carmean overcome the obstacles since the early days.

”He was usually the smallest player as a youth and played against older kids, but as an example of his determination he would go by himself and kick the ball against the wall of his parent’s sandwich shop on Cape Coral Parkway for hundreds of hours,” Nardiello said. “His personal trainer was the cement wall.

“By the time Eddie was a high school senior he was one of the fastest players on the field but he had to prove himself again at South Florida, eventually making all conference. The odds were also against him making the pro team but his work ethic prevailed.

“I hired Eddie to become a CCSA trainer by accident. His mother Bunny was teaching at Caloosa Middle School and she mentioned her son was a pro in Kansas Cit. The connection was priceless, thinking of the years ahead and he and wife Missy returned home. Now today Eddie shares his tenacity and love of the game with our kids and coaches.”

The mission Carmean has carved out for himself as the city’s director of soccer operations and instruction continues to expand.

The CCSA Cyclones competitive program has produced 16 Region Cup champions and five President’s Cup winners in the last three years. The U14 girl’s team made the final four nationally in 2013.

“The soccer fields are literally my second home. I’ve made a lot of concessions but the rewards have made up for the commitment,” Carmean said. “You have challenges but the big picture is strong.

“I had no idea my career would go in this direction but now 17 years later, seeing the adults signing up their kids, knowing I coached the parents.”

Tye Cole coaches two teams in the Cyclones program and was in charge of the final four team four years ago.

“What he has done is incredible but more importantly he is a good guy, good with people,” Cole said. “Eddie sacrificed and was relentless in his approach but now look at his accomplishments.”

“Eddie is very understanding, never passing judgement until he has a discussion with everyone,” said Cathy Hunter, President of the CCSA. “Eddie is perfect because he loves what he does and he’s good at it.”
